The Novaris Surge Circuit Breakers are designed specifically for overcurrent protection of Metal Oxide Varistor (MOV) based Type I and Type II (Primary and Secondary) surge protection devices.
The SCB have a low continuous current rating of 3A which is more than enough to provide power for the Novaris failsafe active alarm circuit. This low current rating is important to be able to protect the MOV based SPD from overvoltage faults such as line to neutral faults or MV/HV injection. In a continuous overvoltage situation the surge circuit breaker will disconnect the SPD protecting the MOVs from degradation.
Unlike typical circuit breakers, the Novaris Surge Circuit Breaker surge current rating is not based on the continuous current rating. Generally a 63A Circuit Breaker is required to pass 40kA of surge current which in turn means the breaker passes a large amount of current to the MOVs in an overvoltage situation. The SCB1-3-80 has a 3A continuous current rating but also an 80kA 8/20us Imax surge rating for secondary protection devices such as the SDD3-100-275. The SCB1-3-25 has a 3A continuous current rating and a Iimp 10/350us of 25kA for primary protection devices such as the SD3-200-275.
Novaris MOV based surge protection when paired with the Novaris SCBs implement the ultimate protection combination, providing extremely low let through voltage, high durability against continuous overvoltage, and no follow on current.
